A joint roadmap to a sustainable species sector

We sustainably transform the mainstream spices sector, thereby securing future sourcing and stimulating economic growth in producing countries

The Sustainable Spices Initiative (SSI), a sector-wide consortium founded in 2012, brings together an international group of companies active within the spices, herbs, dehydrated vegetables and food industry and retail, who are willing to develop a collective strategy and take a leading role towards the sustainable production, processing and global trade of these ingredients.

How we work

 

SSI drives collaborative action by creating a level playing field, by setting joint targets and by developing credible tools, policies, and approaches in working groups and with the support of experts.

SSI members work on concrete actions towards reaching the different SSI targets in several working groups. Moreover, regular learning exchange sessions are organized on key topics

Knowledge sharing and learning

We aim to create a common understanding of sustainability and exchange best practices.

Outreach and convening with strategic stakeholders

We ensure demand for sustainable spices by convening with stakeholders.

Building commitment through covenants with front-runners

We build demand and drive sector investment for sustainability in the supply chains.

Setting sector-wide approach

We co-fund projects, professionalize farmers and stimulate the creation of sustainable supply of spices.

Offering a comparison and benchmarking

We offer a choice of existing sustainability standards for the sector.

Creation of local platforms of international and local stakeholders

We address critical local issues (e.g. agrochemical use in Vietnam and India).

Meet the SSI Steering Committee

 

The SSI steering committee is the highest governance body of SSI. The steering committee members are elected by the SSI members and represent the different membership categories. They meet four times a year and take strategic decisions on the SSI programs.
